At Find Sanctuary we are committed to providing comprehensive and affirming care for individuals seeking gender-affirming services. Our assessment process follows the standards set by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH standards of care version 8 ) to ensure that each client's unique needs and experiences are respected and prioritised.
A supportive environment allows for gender affirmation; social and, where sought, medical and legal affirmation.
Gender incongruence is a term used to describe a condition related to sexual health, which may have implications for healthcare such as requiring access to medical gender affirmation (e.g. WHO, 2019, US Endocrine Society 2020).
What to Expect:
Comprehensive Evaluation: Our assessments cover various aspects of your life, including personal history, medical background, mental health, and social support systems. This holistic approach ensures that you receive personalized care tailored to your specific circumstances.WPATH assessments normally take between 4-6 sessions, depending on the complexity of your situation. In some cases it may be necessary for you to see other specialists (such as GP, endocrinologist, psychiatrist, etc) as part of the assessment process.
WPATH assessments do NOT determine what your gender is or is not. They are comprehensive diagnostic assessments that focus on helping you to make sure the next step of your transition journey is beneficial and to ensure that you are equipped to make an informed choice for your treatment.
Respect and Validation: We conduct our assessments in a non-judgmental and affirming environment. Your gender identity is yours and yours alone; our role is not to change that but to support you in your journey. The assessment focuses on identifying other factors, such as mental health, that may impact your transition.
Collaborative Process: We believe in a collaborative approach where your input, preferences, and goals are central to the assessment process. Together, we work to create a care plan that aligns with your transition goals.
Ongoing Support: The assessment is just the beginning. We provide ongoing support and guidance throughout your transition, ensuring you have access to the resources and care you need.
Comprehensive Reporting: After the assessment, a detailed report will be provided to your primary healthcare provider. Upon your request, this report can also be sent to other specialists involved in your care, facilitating seamless communication and coordination of services.
The process usually takes a few appointments to complete.
Sessions are charged at the clinician’s standard fee for a 50 minute session. With a GP referral and valid mental health care plan a Medicare rebate of $96.65 is available for each session (up to 10 sessions per calendar year).
There are additional costs for WPATH reports. Medicare does not provide a rebate for reports.
At Find Sanctuary, we are dedicated to supporting you through every step of your gender transition journey. If you have any questions about our WPATH assessment process or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact us. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities.
